Those distinctive circular marks may have made cupping famous, but the treatment is more than something you might have seen on an Olympic athlete.

At Moveology Studio in Nantwich, we can incorporate cupping into treatment when appropriate, particularly for areas of muscular tightness, tension, or restricted movement.

As with everything we do at Moveology, we use it because it makes sense for the person in front of us, not simply because it happens to look good on Instagram.

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping is a treatment technique that uses specially designed cups placed onto the skin.

A vacuum inside the cup gently draws the skin and superficial tissues upward. This produces a very different sensation from traditional massage, where pressure is generally applied down into the tissues.

Cups can be left in place for a period of time or moved across an area, depending on the technique used and the treatment aim.

Why do we use cupping?

We may incorporate cupping into a treatment session to work with areas of muscular tension, stiffness, or discomfort.

Some people particularly enjoy the different sensation that cupping provides compared with massage or other hands-on techniques.

At Moveology, cupping is another tool we can use, not a treatment we apply automatically. We’ll first consider what’s going on, what you’d like help with and whether cupping is an appropriate option.

What does cupping feel like?

When we apply a cup, you’ll usually feel a pulling or lifting sensation as the vacuum forms.

It should feel manageable, and we can adjust the suction. We’ll check how it feels throughout treatment and adapt the technique where necessary.

After treatment, the area may feel different or temporarily tender, much like after other forms of hands-on therapy.

Does cupping leave marks?

It can.

Cupping can leave temporary circular areas of discolouration where the cups were placed. These vary considerably from person to person and typically fade over time.

The marks are one reason it’s worth mentioning an upcoming event, holiday or occasion where you’d rather not have a collection of circles on display.

We’ll explain what to expect before treatment so you can decide whether you’re happy to proceed.

Cupping as part of a wider treatment approach

At Moveology, cupping doesn’t exist in isolation.

Depending on your needs, we may combine it with other approaches such as soft tissue therapy, sports massage, acupuncture, movement, or exercise.

We’ll consider your symptoms, activity, goals and wider circumstances before deciding what combination is appropriate.

Because ultimately, the goal isn’t to collect as many treatment techniques as possible. It’s to help you move and feel better with an approach that makes sense for you.

Is cupping suitable for everyone?

Cupping isn’t right for everyone.

Before treatment, we’ll ask about your health, symptoms and relevant medical history. We’ll also explain what the treatment involves, including the possibility of temporary skin marks.

If cupping isn’t appropriate for you, we can discuss alternative treatment options, such as acupuncture therapy or a sports massage.
